An interesting film that appeared to have some underlying themes of racism. I found it curious how the brains of white people are removed and placed into black people. So does that make them zombies? I think so, in a weird and twisted way, that both people are essentially dead but living in a different body. So, under the definition of what we discussed in class, yes, they are zombies.

According to the Wikipedia description of the film, there are two underlying themes within the film. One being: “The thing Get Out does so well – and the thing that will rankle with some viewers – is to show how, however unintentionally, these same people can make life so hard and uncomfortable for black people. It exposes a liberal ignorance and hubris that has been allowed to fester. It’s an attitude, an arrogance which in the film leads to a horrific final solution, but in reality, leads to a complacency that is just as dangerous.”

And the second one is: “The film also depicts the lack of attention on missing black Americans compared to missing white female. Slate’s Damon Young stated the film’s premise was “depressingly plausible … Although black people only comprise 13 percent of America’s population, they are 34 percent of America’s missing, a reality that exists as the result of a mélange of racial and socioeconomic factors rendering black lives demonstratively less valuable than the lives [of] our white counterparts.”

The racial undertones are strong in the movie as there is an obvious conflict for Chris as he goes to meet Rose’s parents the first time. Why in 2019 should a young man be uncomfortable meeting his girlfriend’s parents…white, black or otherwise? It is a sad state of affairs when in this day and age there is still a question of skin color for two people. Also, the strong racial comments made by Rose’s weird brother…as said above the issue of making the young man uncomfortable due to his skin color.

The bidding on Chris by the Armitage’s guests also reminded me also of the bidding on a slave. The seriousness of slavery being brought to the forefront of the viewer. Jordan Pelee has definitely made the viewers feel uncomfortable about some pressing issues of the black man or woman in American, even in 2019.

  1. Horrifying statistic about missing people of colour in the US, though I suppose it shouldn’t surprise me given the situation here in Canada with missing and murdered Indigenous women. Likewise, a disproportionate number of those incarcerated in the US are African-American, while here in Canada, a disproportionate number of Indigenous people are incarcerated.
